Mangroves protect water quality by removing nutrients and pollutants from stormwater runoff before they reach seagrass habitats and coral reefs. They not only help to keep water clean, act as a buffer for the sea and as nurseries for fish, crustaceans and other organisms, they also provide a good environment for nesting birds.
